Gleecap: A house full of hecklers

April 26th, 2011

We all know money doesn’t grow on trees. But if you want to be successful, sometimes you’ve gotta hustle for your dreams…and dough. This is what the kids of Glee learned in this week’s long-awaited new episode.

New Directions realized they needed $5,000 to go to Nationals in New York, and the Brainiacs (Artie, Tina, Mike and…Brittany?) needed an extra $250 for their trip to Detroit. Mr. Schue suggested selling saltwater taffy, but they’d need to sell 21,000 pieces to pay for both trips. Too many numbers for everyone’s liking. How about a benefit concert? The club agreed they’d sing songs by neglected artists and sell tickets to the school for the “Night of Neglect.”

Meanwhile, Sue couldn’t sit back and watch New Directions be successful at anything, including fund raising, so she assembled a team called the “League of Doom”. This included everyone who wants to take the Glee club down. Members consisted of Mr. Schue’s ex wife Terri, “The Honey Badger,” old Glee club coach Sandy “The Pink Dagger,” and Vocal Adrenaline coach Dustin “Sgt. Handsome.” Their first plan of action? Gather a group of hecklers to heckle the Night of Neglect to the point of cancellation.

Guest star Gwyneth Paltrow returned as Mr. Schue’s substitute teacher-girlfriend Holly Holiday, and there was obvious tension between the two when they found out Carl left Emma. Throughout the episode things seemed off between Mr. Schue and Holly, so she showed her feelings by singing “Turning Tables” to Will. She then revealed that she was accepting a permanent teaching job in Cleveland. You hear that, kids? That’s the sound of Wemma coming back in the near future. I know it.

Also guest starring this week was Charise, reprising her role as New Directions member-turned Vocal Adrenaline star Sunshine Corazon. Sunshine promised she would get her hundreds of Twitter followers to come to the Night of Neglect if she could close the show, and blew the club away with a teaser performance of “All By Myself.” Skeptical, the club agreed out of desperation for an audience. Feeling a little neglected herself after getting pushed to the middle of the set, Mercedes went all super-diva and set some ground rules thanks to her new “manager” Lauren Zizes. Her demands got a little out of control, but Rachel kept pulling out all the stops to make Mercedes happy.

Come showtime, thanks to the works of “Sgt. Handsome,” Charise and her hundreds of Twitter followers bailed. This left an audience consisting of Kurt, Blaine, Sandy, and of course, the Heckling club, which consisted of Becky, Jacob and Azimio. Tina was up first and was greeted by a nice, rough heckling, which resulted in her running off stage in tears. Looking for a quick solution, the Glee club gave the audience saltwater taffy, which allowed Mike Chang to dance in peace. By intermission they needed a more permanent solution, so Holly had a heart to heart with the hecklers, but they just opted to leave instead.

At this point Mercedes’ demands were not met and she refused to go on. After storming out to her car, Rachel followed and apologized for never sharing the spotlight and told Mercedes she should close the show with “Ain’t No Way.” Sandy was so moved by her performance that he donated all of his drug money to pay for Nationals.

This episode had us asking ourselves a lot of questions. Will Mr. Schue and Emma become an item again? Is Rachel really going to share the spotlight with the rest of the club? And what will Sue’s League of Doom do next? Let’s hope Tuesday’s 90 minute episode will clear things up.
