Golden Covers of “Black & Gold” (Har, har)

January 13th, 2009

I want to marry and have babies with the song “Black and Gold” by Sam Sparro. It just makes my world complete right now; the melody is killer. But instead of playing the tune to its death bead, I decided that I must take immediate action and find different versions for variety’s sake. Today in my black and gold themed internet travels, I stumbled upon some covers - a couple of which are actually quite great.

First of all, if you haven’t heard the song, it’s a spacey tune (nominated for a Best Dance Song Grammy) with a terrific hook. To wit: (listen here). [Please note: if you're not a pop fan, you will probably not like it]

And now, the covers. The first version I heard was Katy Perry’s - it’s better than I expected… I think because she performed it during an acoustic set shortly after her break up with Travis McCoy, and you can hear the emotion in her voice.

Then we have Adele, who did a fab job - totally did the song justice:

But THEN I found this lavish composition by The Guillemots, which turns the song into something way different, but way good:

So the question remains: which version is best?? I think I might go with The Guillemots, meself…

  3. As much as I find Katy Perry and her impact on pop music abhorrent, she actually did a half-decent job with this, as she did with MGMT’s “Electric Feel”. Now, after paying Katy Perry a compliment, I must shower to try to remove the filth.

  4. Katy Perry’s got a knack for churning out (heavily processed) catchy pop songs is impressive, but she simply can’t pull it off in person. Mega studio effects and post prod touchups for this one. It’s a shame.
