Good Guy Jason Schwartzman Turns Evil

Actor Jason Schwartzman is a sweet guy in real life so it took some really hard acting to get into the role of Gideon Graves, one of the seven evil ex-boyfriend’s Scott Pilgrim has to fight in the new movie Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World. “I have been picked on a lot. I know what it’s like to be f-cked around with and I hate that so I was able to use some of it because God gave me lemons and I made Gideon,” he told MuchMusic.

“We wanted it to be like the ultimate evil. We do want there to be a feeling of, ‘okay now we’ve hit some real evil here,’” Schwartzman said about Gideon. “We thought maybe one thing that we could do that might be interesting would be to make my character really passive aggressive. Smiling, condescending, we had this idea just kill him with kindness.”

His costar Anna Kendrick chimed in saying, “I think Jason is so good at playing evil because he’s so nice.”

Schwartzman has been in the music industry for years previously with Phantom Planet and more recently with Coconut Records which gave him material to feed off of for his character, a label executive and club owner. “I’ve seen some pretty bad people but no one quite like Gideon Graves,” he said. “They weren’t evil they were just misguided, whereas I think Gideon he knew he was being a little bit sinister.” Check out the full clip below.
