The Grammys were full of surprises last night, including jazz artist Esperanza Spalding’s “Best New Artist” win over Justin Bieber and Drake, and Arcade Fire’s “Album of the Year” win. But some things never change: like seeing Lady Gaga show up in yet another crazy outfit, and watching Selena Gomez’s fashion evolution from teen-star to young style icon.
Here are some of our favourite fashion moments (good and bad) from last night’s big show:
Lady Gaga is taking her new single “Born This Way” a little too literally. The singer arrived on the red carpet in an egg-shaped pod, carried by gold-clad attendants. In fact, you would’ve never believed that Gaga was actually in the egg, were it not for a wave of her hand every few steps. Once inside, Gaga changed into a skin-baring outfit for “Born This Way” performance. Some snarky bloggers likened her to a “strand of spaghetti,” though we kinda liked the nude-coloured look, complete with spiked shoulder pads and a long blond ponytail. Gaga later tweeted that her outfit was a joint collaboration between European fashion designers Hussein Chalayan and Thierry Mugler. It wasn’t quite as shocking as her previous outfits (can you say meat dress?) but maybe we’ve just gotten used to Gaga’s unpredictable style.
Katy Perry must’ve really loved her Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show performance from last fall, because she showed up on the red carpet sporting a pair of fluffy wings. The singer dazzled in a beautiful Armani gown, while her husband Russell Brand coordinated in an Armani suit. If you thought their red carpet posing was sappy, Katy’s Grammy performance really turned up the “ooh’s” and “aww’s” and she rose up in a long gown attached to a flower-adorned swing while images of her and Brand’s India wedding projected in the background. Maybe it’s the Valentine’s Day spirit but we totally fell for it. So sweet!
Rihanna’s never been shy about showing off her curves and the singer wowed in a Jean Paul Gaultier gown on the red carpet. We liked that she was going for something different, though we have to ask: did it remind anyone else of Christmas garland?
Let’s just get to it: Justin Bieber is all grown up! The Biebs looked super dapper in a white velvet tuxedo suit and vest from D&G with black bow tie and pocket square. (The pocket square is such a nice touch!) He may not have taken home any awards but he definitely scored some style points with us! (Just be nice Bieber fans: let’s celebrate how good Justin looked on the red carpet and on stage instead of bashing Esperanza Spalding’s victory!)
Our boy Drake showed up with the best accessory of the night: his mom! The rap superstar looked great in his black-on-black suit, but it was his date that made him the most fashionable man on the scene. Like they say, being a good son never goes out of style!
Other looks that caught our eye:
Selena Gomez looking like a model in a silvery-gold gown by J. Mendel
Nicki Minaj’s over-the-top leopard look created especially for her by Givenchy Haute Couture (the lady just goes for it and always ends up looking hot! Plus we love that she admitted on the red carpet that she wasn’t wearing spanx!)
Cee-Lo’s song “F**k You” may have been bleeped for colourful language, but he proved his wardrobe was just a colourful, with a carnival-inspired outfit that was the perfect choice for his big personality. I mean, we wouldn’t wear this look out in public…but for a big award show, sure!
