Grammy08: WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE

As I was perusing the Grammy nominations, I noticed the lackluster state of affairs that is the Best New Artist category. Both Kat and I both reacted with a big “HUH?!” when we saw these two names:
Lady Antebellum
Jazmine Sullivan
To recap our reaction: WHO? Now, just because I work at MuchMusic doesn’t mean I’m some sort of all-encompassing music guru, but I do know a thing’er two about a thing’er two. And in case you didn’t get my drift, who?!
Let’s get to the bottom of these mysterious nominees, shall we? So, QUESTION OF THE DAY: Who is Lady Antebellum and Jazmine Sullivan?
ANSWER OF THE DAY:
Country group formed in 2006, comprised of two dudes and a chick. First single “Love Don’t Live Here” charted in May 2008 and they’ve since won a couple of country music awards.

Verdict: Though this tune made it to #53 on Billboard’s Hot 100, I’ve still never heard it. Maybe I need to listen to more radio, but then again, no.
Ok, now here’s where I’m ashamed. Jazmine is apparently Missy Elliott’s protege and her first single “Need U Bad” reached #1 on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop chart. Not only did she score a Best New Artist nomination, she came away with four others, too! Her song “Bust Your Windows” is great, and why is MuchMusic not showing some love?

Verdict: Just call me an insta-fan (bandwagon, I see you and would like to catch a ride plz). I’m a little bummed I didn’t know about this chick before, and her album was released in September!
So there you have it. If you too were unschooled about these two nominees, consider yourself learnededed. Do they have what it takes to beat Adele, Duffy or the Jonas Brothers?

There are only like 2 people with talent on the list.. Jonas Brothers, and Bruce Springsteen.

JONAS BROTHERS ALL THE WAY!!! They deserve Best new Artist! The others I have hardly heard of! EVERYONE has heard of the Jonas Brothers through SOMEONE! They’ve worked SO hard this year. Headlining 2 tours [in ONE year!], making there own book, the releasing of “A Little Bit Longer” [Which went Platinum], The airing of their first movie Camp Rock [Which is the 2nd most watched Television Movie ever] and enough tv appearances to last you a life time. Not to mention their music! All of it was written by them and performed by them and their band! Their lyrics are just so amazing! You can related to every word they say… and even though they’ve only just started getting big they’ve already helped produce their friend Demi Lovato’s CD! They are amazing artist and even though they are signed with hollywood records (disney) it doesn’t mean they aren’t real musician! All I can say is that if they don’t win somethings wrong with this world. Cause they are definitely the best new artist of the year!!

The best new artist category is always a joke anyway. Leslie Feist got nominated in that category last year and it only took her 3 albums to get there! Ideal best new artists?

Of course, this is the Grammys, so why would I expect them to be musically relevant? I was shocked with the Weezy and Radiohead nominations, but I guess it’s safe to throw those out there when it’s obvious that Coldplay is going to win everything.

I totally agree with Mike - I was looking for Santogold on that list; at the very least, she’s the most “Grammy safe” new artist that belongs on there. Are the Grammys based on sales or countdown spots? I can’t remember. Maybe those two artists are big in, I dunno, Argentina or something.

the jonasbrothers will be beaten by EVERYBODY on that list… then again, they have a bunch of girls always stalking them, so maybe not. If the awards voted by how many stalkers you have, then they win.. not sure why they win for that, all the other artists are better, and Joe is way shallow. i mean, dumping Taylor over 30 second convo over the phone for another girl? I don’t get why people like them anyway. TEAM TAYLOR, jb smells like old ppl, exactly how they dress

Leona Lewis should have soooo been nominated for this category. forget the jonas brothers, Leona lewis is really talented.

“lackluster state of affairs” - you took the words out of my mouth. I always think of “best new artist” as a hugely hyped thing…like, I want bands that came out of NOWHERE and took the world by storm (come on, even Katy Perry would be nomination-worthy) to be on this list. It should be compiled of bands/artists that didn’t exist (in the spotlight) until 2008. a zeitgeist thing.
