As I was perusing the Grammy nominations, I noticed the lackluster state of affairs that is the Best New Artist category. Both Kat and I both reacted with a big “HUH?!” when we saw these two names:

Lady Antebellum
Jazmine Sullivan

To recap our reaction: WHO? Now, just because I work at MuchMusic doesn’t mean I’m some sort of all-encompassing music guru, but I do know a thing’er two about a thing’er two. And in case you didn’t get my drift, who?!

Let’s get to the bottom of these mysterious nominees, shall we? So, QUESTION OF THE DAY: Who is Lady Antebellum and Jazmine Sullivan?

ANSWER OF THE DAY:

Lady Antebellum

Country group formed in 2006, comprised of two dudes and a chick. First single “Love Don’t Live Here” charted in May 2008 and they’ve since won a couple of country music awards.

Verdict: Though this tune made it to #53 on Billboard’s Hot 100, I’ve still never heard it. Maybe I need to listen to more radio, but then again, no.

Jazmine Sullivan

Ok, now here’s where I’m ashamed. Jazmine is apparently Missy Elliott’s protege and her first single “Need U Bad” reached #1 on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop chart. Not only did she score a Best New Artist nomination, she came away with four others, too! Her song “Bust Your Windows” is great, and why is MuchMusic not showing some love?

Verdict: Just call me an insta-fan (bandwagon, I see you and would like to catch a ride plz). I’m a little bummed I didn’t know about this chick before, and her album was released in September!

So there you have it. If you too were unschooled about these two nominees, consider yourself learnededed. Do they have what it takes to beat Adele, Duffy or the Jonas Brothers?
