Green Day releasing tribute song for Amy Winehouse

July 26th, 2012

After her untimely death last July, Green Day wrote and performed their Amy Winehouse tribute song Amy for the first time at their secret show on August 11, 2011 in Costa Mesa, California. A few days after the performance, Green Day released the lyrics to Amy on their band website, which included the lines “May I have this last dance/By chance if we should meet?/Can you write me a lullaby?/So we can sing you to sleep.”

With the band readying to release three albums over the next year, Green Day has now announced that one of the 38 songs from ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, ¡Tré! will be their tribute track Amy. The song will appear at the end of the bands second album ¡Dos!, with lead singer Billy Joe Armstrong explaining the placement of the track, saying “I didn’t know her (Amy), I just thought it was a real tragic loss. It’s interesting because if you think about ‘¡Dos!’, it’s a party record, and so at the end of it ‘Amy’ kind of comes across as the consequences of the party.”

Green Day’s three albums will be released in stages, with ¡Uno! coming out on September 24, ¡Dos! on November 12 and ¡Tré! on January 14, 2013.
