Green Day lead singer Billy Joe Armstrong has checked into rehab for substance abuse after suffering a public meltdown on stage in Las Vegas at the iHeart Radio Show over weekend. Armstrong became enraged after claiming that Green Day’s set had been cut short at the concert, which also featured performances from Usher, Rihanna and Taylor Swift.
Armstrong used the final sixty seconds of his set to go on a violent rant, which included a Justin Bieber reference, a lot of swearing and a smashed guitar. The band has confirmed Armstrong’s treatment with an official statement on the site, saying “Billie Joe is seeking treatment for substance abuse. We would like everyone to know that our set was not cut short by Clear Channel and to apologize to those we offended at the iHeartRadio Festival in Las Vegas. We regretfully must postpone some of our upcoming promotional appearances.”
Green Day are in the midst of an international promotional campaign for the first of their three albums hitting stores between now and January. The band’s first album, ¡UNO!, is set to be released tomorrow.
