Haiti Postpones Wyclef’s Presidential Bid

August 18th, 2010

Haiti’s electoral commission said on Tuesday that it has postponed its ruling on viable presidential nominees for their November elections which leaves Wyclef Jean’s bid up in the air.

Jean is just one of dozens of people hoping to achieve candidacy and then eventually the role of president in the earthquake shattered country. Jean also admitted on Tuesday that he has gone into hiding after receiving death threats. He told The Associated Press that he received a phone call telling him to get out of Haiti.

The main issue of contention surrounding Jean’s confirmation as a nominee is his American upbringing. Haiti’s constitution requires candidates to have lived in the country for five years to be eligible to run.

The announcement will come this Friday.
