Meet Dan and Alexei: the husband-and-wife duo better known as Handsome Furs. The Montreal-based synth-rockers were in Toronto this week performing at Canadian Music Week and we got a chance to ask them about their live show and their new role – as documentary filmmakers.
Thanks to a chance meeting with a CNN producer, Dan and Alexei were given a pair of FLIP cams last year and invited to document their tour across Asia. The footage was edited into four webisodes called “Indie Asia,” and premiered on the CNN website last month. The clips show the two sampling Asian cuisine, traveling to some historic sites (the Great Wall, for instance) and playing in front of some die-hard fans in the most remote and obscure locations (Tianjin anyone?).
Along the way, they introduce viewers to some up-and-coming Asian rock bands, who prove that music really knows no boundaries. In fact, Dan and Alexei told us at CMW that they’re returning to Asia in a couple of months, and this time, they’re planning to play in Burma. Judging by their raucous set at El Mocambo Friday night (or early Saturday morning depending on how you look at it), the people of Burma are in for a loud, sweaty, feel-good show unlike anything they’ve probably seen before. Hopefully for us, Dan and Alexei will have their FLIP cams on hand once again to capture the magic as it goes down.
