By chance we happened to be in Ethiopia on the Ethiopian New Year, which also coincidentally happened to be my birthday! How crazy is that? So during my time in Africa the whole country was preparing to celebrate with decorations, music and of course the best thing at any good party, food!
On the evening of my birthday I found myself surrounded by our Ethiopian hotel staff while singing and dancing under a sky illuminated by fireworks. This wasn’t for me, it was for New Years, but I took this as a special gift from the cosmos. It really was something beautiful to see.
In the days leading up to the New Years Eve celebrations it became a joke to watch our new Ethiopian friends bargain for the best and least expensive sheep they could find to bring home. To eat. Turns out a good Sheep would cost you about 6 Canadian dollars. The whole process was pretty amazing and I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate my own beginning of a new year.
