December 24th, 2010
I think it’s safe to say that 2010 did a prettyyy good job with keeping us entertained over the past few months. Movies like Toy Story 3, Inception, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt 1, Black Swan, The Other Guys, The Social Network, The Town, and a gazillion and one 3D movies. The time has come to see what movies will make us laugh, cry, touch our hearts, and or go “WAH THE FRITZ” in 2011. For your viewing pleasure we’ve compiled our top picks for the New Year. Grab some popcorn, get your ticket stub and start reading!
Best Comic Book Adaptation: The Green Lantern (June 17th)
Newly single and Canadian hottie Ryan Reynolds stars as Hal Jordan, the first human to be chosen to join a brotherhood of warriors known as the Green Lantern Corps who are protectors of the universe. Gossip Girl’s Blake Lively costars and while there are tons of adaptations out next year, this one is causing serious buzz amongst comic book fans and will likely be the first of the next series of DC films we can look forward to in the future.
Honorable Mentions: Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, X-Men: First Class, The Green Hornet
Best Series Sequel: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt. II (July 15th)
Ten years, seven books, and eight films in the making, this July we will receive one of our last pieces of the Harry Potter world for a long time. The sequel to the final part of the Harry Potter series will be released in 3D, and given where Part I stopped, will surely be packed with crazy cool effects and battle scenes that will make the July 1st Muggle fireworks look pretty lame-o.
Honorable Mentions: Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Strange Tides, Breaking Dawn Part 1, Fast Five
Best New Teen-Fantasy: I Am Number Four
Based on the book by Jobie Hughes and James Frey, this movie tells the story of nine alien children who survived the destruction of their planet Lorien and seek refuge on Earth. The issue? Mogadorians, the invaders who destroyed Lorien, followed these survivors, and are killing each of in numerical order. Alex Pettyfer (who will be the new teen heart throb, trufax) plays Number Four, the next one on the Mogadorians hitlist and the one who wants to fight back to survive. Get this: the movie began filming BEFORE the book even came out, and is directed by DJ Caruso with Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg producing. Snap!
Honorable Mentions: Beastly
Best Comedy: The Hangover II (May 26th)
The Hangover has solidified itself as a classic, so it’ll be interesting to see if the sequel can surpass the epic hilarity that is the original. And of course, Zach Galifianakis is pretty much king in every movie he does, and we all want to see him reprise his role as Alan … with the satchel.
Honorable Mentions: A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas, The Dilemma, Your Highness
Best Animated Movie: Cars 2 (June 24th)
There are a lot of contenders for this category so it was a pretty hard decision, but it seems that the sequel to Disney-Pixar’s 2006 film is one of the most anticipated films of the upcoming year…and it will, of course, be in 3D. Lightning McQueen and Mater find themselves at an international World Prix, but in an unexpected twist, Mater has a run in with an international espionage which will surely take him on some crazy turns. Intrigued? Me too! And I just lurves me some Pixar.
Honorable Mentions: Kung Fu Panda 2, Winnie the Pooh, The Smurfs, Happy Feet 2
Best Horror/Thriller Movie: Scream 4 (April 15th)
The classic series is coming back to the big screen with the first in what’s planned to be a new trilogy. Neve Campbell Scott, David Arquette and Courtney Cox are all reprising their roles as Sidney Prescott, Dewey Riley and Gale Weathers Riley. There isn’t much known about the plot, but the trailer looks hella good and will surely make you, your friend, your friends friend and co want to scream.
Honorable Mentions: The Apparition, Final Destination 5, Paranormal Activity 3, The Roommate
Best Film Adaptation: Water for Elephants (April 15th)
Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon, and Christopher Waltz star in this film about the complex relations of an animal trainer, equestrian, and veterinarian who work for the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. Based on Canadian author Sara Gruen’s book of the same title, the movie looks absolutely gorgeous and will likely give us another reason to swoon over R.Pattz (srs, watch the trailer… there’s a lot of pouty looks)
Honorable Mentions: The Adventures of Tin Tin: Secret of the Unicorn, Something Borrowed, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Invention of Hugo Cabret
Best Fantasy/Sci Fi Movie: Sucker Punch
Zack Snyder, the director who helmed 300 and Watchmen penned the script for this movie, which features an all female ensemble cast (Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone). It follows a girl who is forced to use her imagination to escape an asylum with her four friends in order to avoid being lobotomized. Weird? Definitely, but with Snyder behind the film, you can be sure that we’re going to see some bad ass action sequences and maybe even something that can finally overtake the “THIS. IS. SPARTA” line. Or maybe not. That was pretty epic.
Honorable Mentions: Cowboys & Aliens, Caeser: Rise of the Apes, Now, Super 8
This is just a small handful of movies that we’re going to be seeing in the next 12 months…so tell me, what are you the most excited for??
