Has Justin Bieber ever really been an underdog?

In an upcoming interview with Ryan Seacrest as acquired by Canoe, Justin Bieber lays it down for Seacrest in terms of the challenges he has had to overcome. Justin explained, “I feel like, in some ways, I am the underdog. Because it’s like there’s… there’s people that don’t believe that… I can make the transition from being a teen pop star to an adult. So I think that, yeah, definitely.” Justin continued, “I feel like I just don’t want to be another teen heartthrob, ’cause… I just think that that just annoys me. To think that that’s what people will think of me, I just want to prove people wrong…”

And Believe was a way to prove to people he could be more than just another pop act. Justin went on to explain, “I think Believe has really showcased what I’m capable of, especially becoming an 18 year old and becoming an adult. And hearing older people say, ‘Wow, this new album’s great. Like I didn’t know that was Justin Bieber.’ Or, you know, ‘Wow, like I never used to listen to Justin Bieber’s music, and now I like his music.’ Or, ‘This, ‘As Long As You Love Me‘, that’s Justin Bieber singing?’ I like those reactions, because I feel like they’re judging me based on my music and not based on, you know, a flick of my hair.”

Okay, given all that, I’ll agree that in terms of pop music for the last two decades a lot of pre-pubescent pop acts have had to overcome a very public leap from kiddie pop star to pop act adults can love. Sometimes they transition nearly seamlessly (Justin Timberlake) or they transition terribly (Britney Spears), or they fade away (Lil’ Bow Wow? Aaron Carter?). But in this particular heat of the race to a long legacy of superstardom, is Justin actually a underdog?

I vote “No”. To be an underdog means that you are the least likely to survive and or succeed in whatever effort put forth in front of you. Justin has a built one of the strongest foundations possible for long career: a solid and supportive family, management that has been there since the beginning, and the best fans this planet has ever seen (yeah, we’re talking about you.) His talent has been apparent even from a young-young age (um, have you seen Never Say Never?) so even if it were a question of where he is going to take his skills, he has no where to go but up.

The fact that he is so concerned about working hard and trying to be the best version of himself is very telling. Sure, Justin, call yourself an underdog if it helps you produce the best that you can, but we want you to know that you don’t have to worry if your work will be reduced to a flick of your hair – it’s what is behind that glorious mane of yours that will see you through Believe and beyond.
