Last month marked the 20th anniversary of Nirvana’s awesome, yet usually underrated third LP, In Utero. A lavish, comprehensive box set was released to commemorate the birthday featuring “70 remastered, remixed, rare and unreleased recordings, including B-sides, compilation tracks, never-before-heard demos and live material” as well as the live DVD, Live and Loud. One thing it should have included was Milkin’ It, a FREE full covers album compiled by Toronto label Hand Drawn Dracula. I’m sure it was Courtney Love who put the kibosh on it…
According to a statement issued with the FREE comp, “Milkin’ It represents Toronto’s wealth of styles and sounds, showcasing some of the city’s best bands reinterpreting In Utero through their own unique takes on punk, garage, shoegaze, psych, folk, pop, grunge, Krautrock, industrial, surf, noise and much more, sometimes all at once.” Some of the artists featured on the comp include Hooded Fang, Teenanger, The Wooden Sky, Absolutely Free, Greys and Beliefs. Also of note, the label didn’t just cover the album, but also the four B-sides that come with the anniversary edition. Yes, that includes “Moist Vagina,” courtesy of HSY.
In case you didn’t notice the first two times I wrote it, Milkin’ It is FREE to own via the Soundcloud player below, Facebook or the Hand Drawn Dracula website. That is three ways to get this thing without giving away any of your hard-earned money. Nice, isn’t it?Tweet
