August 29th, 2013
It’s almost time for the heat to settle down and for classes to resume in school. And although report cards and grades are a terrifying thought, we’ve decided to take some of the summer’s biggest hits for a little test of their own. See as we rank six of the summer’s hottest tracks and give them our own grades.
Katy Perry – Roar
An empowering pop anthem that pairs stomping drums with Perry’s determined lyrics of standing up for yourself and speaking up is a confidence-booster that packs just the punch the singer needed for a comeback single. Yes, the song has been accused of stealing its sound from Sara Bareilles’ Brave and Grizzly Bear’s Two Weeks, and we will admit that Roar doesn’t tread new pop territories, but it’s still a solid track that we’ve admittedly had on repeat for weeks now. And if the rest of the album follows suit, Perry is going to have another hit album on her hands.
Lady Gaga – Applause
A bona fide dance track, ready to hit the floor as soon as it hit the airwaves, Applause marks the return of Lady Gaga this summer as well. The track doesn’t have the same immediate impact as Katy Perry’s Roar, but picks up steam after a few listens. A track about living for the applause of her fans, Gaga’s lyrics puts her up on a pedestal, claiming that “art’s in pop culture, in me.” We wouldn’t expect any less from the artist that is Lady Gaga, but when it comes to shouting out the words and pumping up the fists, we’re gonna have to side with team Katy on this. And, for all those people picking on Perry for imitating other people’s songs, put Applause side-by-side with Madonna’s Girl Gone Wild. Exactly.
Robin Thicke feat. Pharrell – Blurred Lines
Misogyny aside, it’s a catchy song – the crazy-good percussions, the strut of the chorus, the addition of Pharrell; it’s understandable why it has become one of the best selling singles of the summer. But it’s misogynistic and that is not something we can look past. And with the amount of negative/wrong responses Thicke has given regarding this topic, it has kind of ruined the song for us. Future hitmakers, take note. These lyrics are not acceptable and dear lord, please never sing these words to a girl.
Grade: F (the beat itself is a solid B+, though)
Daft Punk feat. Pharrell – Get Lucky
Summers are all about staying up all night to get lucky, so this is essentially the perfect soundtrack to our sweltering, hot nights. Daft Punk return to form with this earworm of a song that does what all great Daft Punk songs do: take a simple seed of an idea or hook, plant it within a song and develop it into a slightly repetitive, but catchy-as-hell jam. And with hit-making magic weapon, Pharrell, it’s no wonder this song is such a hit.
Miley Cyrus – We Can’t Stop
The track itself is killer. Yes, there is no doubt that Miley’s recent performance at the MTV Video Music Awards has sparked large discussions over her ignorance towards black culture, but the single itself, which is a simple rebellious party anthem is a great pop song. With the help of producer extraordinaire, Mike WiLL Made It, We Can’t Stop is a carefree anthem fit for millennials. So, go ahead, do whatever you want and don’t stop. Unless you’re misappropriating the culture of an entire race…in that case, don’t do that, please stop.
One Direction – Best Song Ever
Okay, those dance moves alone have charmed us into liking this song. But, cute choreography aside, we’re not convinced that this is One Direction’s best and, please don’t hate us, but definitely not the best song ever. It is an undeniably catchy tune, but we know the boy banders can do better!
