Hollywood’s Crown Jewel: The Breakout Summer Movie

July 14th, 2010

The Top Summer Movie of 2010 is.....?

Gripping the edge of your seat? Check. Mouth open, popcorn in hand. Check. Staring mesmerized like you can’t even move ‘cause you can’t believe what you’re seeing? Check.

The CGI, the special effects, the explosions, the superheroes, the wizards, the aliens and spaceships – watch out, it’s the summer movie blockbusting its way out from Hollywood!

It’s still too close to call which movie will be the breakout summer hit for 2010 (FYI – Toy Story, to date, is killing the competition, but Twilight: Eclipse is close behind and Inception hasn’t even been released yet – check it out this Friday!).

So what other movies have beat out and left the competition in its dust? Looking carefully at box office numbers (and Wikipedia, cause that always makes things easier) here’s your list of the top summer movies for the past ten years! Criteria: the movie released between May – August that made the most money.

Latest two summer winners, Harry Potter and The Dark Knight

2009 – Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
2008 – The Dark Knight
2007 – Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End
2006 – Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest
2005 – Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith
2004 – Shrek 2
2003 – Finding Nemo
2002 – Spider-Man
2001 – Shrek
2000 – Mission: Impossible 2
1999 – Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menance

BUT! If we want to look at the top summer movies of all time (since 1975, when the term “blockbuster” was coined with Steven Spielberg’s Jaws) then the list would be totally different (taking into account if someone were to pay today’s ticket prices for movies in the seventies). Check it out!

All-Time Summer Winners Star Wars and E.T.

10. The Lion King (1995)
9. Forrest Gump (1994)
8. Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menance (1999)
7. Jurassic Park (1993)
6. Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
5. Star Wars Episode 6: Return of the Jedi (1983)
4. Star Wars Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
3. Jaws (1975)
2. E.T. The Extraterrestrial (1982)
1. Star Wars Episode 4: A New Hope (1977)

These aren’t the “cry-me-a-river” dramas that usually come out in the fall, or the date movies that come out as winter turns to spring…..these are the “you-have-to-see-this-movie-before-summer’s-over-no-don’t-rent-it-buy-the-damn-ticket” movies the premiere in May…..and you can still snag tickets to in August and act like you saw it way early in the summer.

So, which movie do you think will be the breakout summer hit of 2010?
