Lady Gaga has found her inner Material Girl in her latest music video/short film creation for Alejandro. The Fame Monster singer, never one to shy away from, well, anything, unleashed an a whole lotta imagery to leave fans, critics and everyone in-between with many, many layers to dissect.
Gone are the product placements, bright, cartoon-like images and interspersed scenes of acting from Telephone. In its place is a mostly black and white shot, all-male cast of dancers who switch back and forth between being Gaga’s army of dancers and her captors.
The second name that appears on the screen – Klein – is for the video’s director, Steven Klein, who is famous for working with Madonna on numerous video projects. His influence, as a result of his work with Madonna, can be seen throughout the video. The religious visuals that Madonna became infamous for are dispersed throughout Alejandro. Gaga dresses as a nun, dons a dress with a cross on it, swallows a rosary (ouch!), and sings in front of a row of wooden crosses. Gaga appears to have drawn a line down the middle of her top front teeth, resembling the space in Madonna’s teeth. Remember the cone bra? A staple in any woman’s wardrobe, of course. Gaga has increased the wow factor (understatement) and is wearing a rifle bra! Do not attempt to board a commercial aircraft with this bra. Security may have issues with you.
Throw in some incredibly uncomfortable looking shoes, dancing in underwear, dancing in underwear on a bed, what looks to be a violent sex act and a funeral progression that includes a barbed wire heart on a pillow and voila! Ale-ale-jandro, Ale-ale-jandro!
