You know what’s a cool thing to do nowadays? Writing open letters! Sinead O’Connor and Sufjan Stevens wrote ones to Miley Cyrus and even rapper Childish Gambino wrote a series of letters recently. Wanna take part in the hot, new trend? Got lots of feelings you wanna put out to the world in the most public way ever? Then boy do we have some simple tips for you!
Follow these steps and get your own open letter published to the internets now!
1. Know the basics — who, what, why, etc.
Who are you writing this open letter to? What’s it about? Why are you writing this? Why is this an open letter and not just an angry tweet? Gotta have the foundations of your letter down before you start penning! Otherwise, you’ll just sit down at your computer and do this:
2. Start writing!
The best way to start doing that is to just begin throwing words down and worry about editing later. You’re supposedly feeling passionate enough about something to word vomit all of your feelings to the public so just let it happen!
3. OKAY PAUSE.
Step away from it for a bit, leave the computer and take a little nap. Clear your head!
4. Make sure it’s not too long.
We get it, you have a lot of feelings, but sometimes being concise is the best way to get a message across! If you’re getting into novel territory (like, 5000 words), maybe chill a little and edit. Edit, edit, edit!
5. Okay, now revisit your letter.
Go back, and make sure your point is clear. When you get heated and write in a panic, your thoughts might get lost. Ask yourself: “DOES THIS MAKE SENSE OR AM I JUST RAMBLING ABOUT NOTHING? DO I SOUND NUTS?” If you want to, also get a friend to look it over.
6. Post it!
Most people opt for public blogs, some do it on Facebook. Celebs can literally throw it into the ether and someone is bound to pick it up and turn it into a news story, especially when said letter is to a public figure *ahem* Miley *ahem*. But whether your open letter is to a close friend, a stranger or a big name celeb, you should feel accomplished, like you got something out of your system and plenty relieved! Go ahead, celebrate with a taco and/or nap because you deserve it!
