Philip Seymour Hoffman had only seven days of filming left to complete his role as Plutarch Heavensbee in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 before his untimely death yesterday. The 46-year-old Academy Award winning actor was found dead in his Manhattan apartment on February 2 after an apparent drug overdose.
A source close to the Hunger Games franchise said that Hoffman had completed his scenes as Heavensbee for Mockingjay Part 1 and was only one week away from finishing his scenes for the final Hunger Games film. Lionsgate, the company behind Hunger Games, released the following statement, saying “Philip Seymour Hoffman was a singular talent and one of the most gifted actors of our generation. We’re very fortunate that he graced our ‘Hunger Games’ family. Losing him in his prime is a tragedy, and we send our deepest condolences to Philip’s family.”
At this point it appears that both films will be released on their previously announced dates of Novevember 21, 2014, and November 20, 2015 without a replacement for Hoffman. The character of Plutarch Heavensbee, the head gamemaker and uprising sympathizer, was first introduced in the second Hunger Games book and film.Tweet
