As a big fan of How I Met Your Mother, Freaks and Geeks, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and of course, the oldie but goodie, Clueless, I was really excited to sit down with actors Jason Segel and Paul Rudd. They were here in Toronto promoting their upcoming flick I Love You, Man, a romantic comedy about platonic male love, that hits theatres on March 20. There are many laugh-out-loud moments in the movie, and similarly, the interview had me in stitches. It’s important to note that I have never had the pleasure of conducting an interview where the discussion of farts, testicles and the perineum are all fair game.
What are some things you can do with a guy friend that you could never, ever do with a girlfriend?
Jason Segel: Use the male restroom…. See the same proctologist.
Paul Rudd: Get simultaneous testicular exams.
Why do some guys have a hard time keeping their male friends when they get a girlfriend?
Jason: It’s pretty remarkable when you have a relationship with a women who you can talk to, who acts like your buddy and then you can also have romance time. To some extent, it can make you think you don’t need guy friends. She’s sort of filling all the roles. But the truth is, you end up burdening your lady, if you make her fill all these roles. It’s important to have some guy friends to take a little of the stress off her.
Paul: I think it’s important to have someone to fart with.
In terms of plutonic male friends showing physical affection to each other, what do you think is, and isn’t acceptable?
Paul: I’ve always found that “Hey man!” (puts arm around Jason), that’s kind of acceptable. A little tickling of the perineum, unacceptable.
