Icona Pop’s video for All Night features Ball Culture
September 12th, 2013
Icona Pop are making New York City’s famed Ball culture the focus of their documentary music video for All Night. The Swedish pop duo have given ballroom community and its members new publicity in 2013, although the scene has been alive and kicking in NYC since the 1980s.
All Night follows a group of members of the ball community as they prepare for and perform at a Ball, an underground LGBT club in New York where performers and ‘houses’ compete in drag while performing incredible dance and vogue routines.
The culture has been referenced in music videos by Madonna and Lady Gaga and explored in the 1990 documentary Paris Is Burning, which you can watch here in full, but this is the first time a mainstream act has made ball culture the focus of their music video and not an inspiration.
Icona Pop shot the video in New York with director Marc Klasfeld, who boasts an impressive resume that includes videos like Fun.’s We Are Young and Against Me!’s Teenage Anarchist.
Icona Pop’s upcoming September 24 release This Is…Icona Pop already made our list of albums we’re excited to hear this month and the latest video for All Night is adding to our growing obsession with the band.
