Is “Brooklyn Girls” The Next “California Gurls” or “Friday”?

July 17th, 2014

Has someone finally made a proper counterpart to Katy Perry’s California Gurls?

Meet Catey Shaw. She’s the latest pop singer to go viral with her music video Brooklyn Girls. The video and single are an ode to the popular New York borough. The indie-pop song is catchy and the video showcases the best of Brooklyn; mainly street style, backyard parties, and graffiti covered buildings.

Catey is quickly becoming internet famous, but not everyone is applauding her cool and gritty video. Many people are criticizing her and calling her the Rebecca Black of Brooklyn, which I think is a little harsh. People are also commenting on her exploitation of Brooklyn. People argue that the video is just a stereotype of what people believe Brooklyn to be. The video does look like a giant Instagram video. The blue-haired singers rhymes about brownstone buildings, Jay Z, and wearing combat boots in the summer. As someone who has never traveled to Brooklyn, this is pretty much what I imagine Brooklyn to be like. Regardless, Catey doesn’t care. She’s tough and gritty and breaks the rules. She’s a Brooklyn girl.
