Jacob Hoggard and Jully Black Give Details on All-Star Canadian Haiti Benefit Song

February 20th, 2010

Jacob Hoggard of Hedley just addressed the Canadian all-star charity cover of K’naan’s Wavin’ Flag, which will benefit Free The Children, War Child Canada, and World Vision.

While co-hosting MOD: Live At The Base on Saturday, Sarah Taylor asked Hoggard how he got involved in the benefit song.

“We’re labelmates with K’naan, and we’ve been involved with Free The Children for a long time,” he explained. Hoggard also commented that the song was important because he’s “noticed how people already seem to have forgotten what’s gone on down [in Haiti],” a country that continues to need support.

As for the recording session itself, “there were cameras everywhere, from the moment we got into the studio.”

The song was recorded at The Warehouse Studio in Vancouver, which was founded by Bryan Adams. But as for Adams’ presence, he was nowhere in sight.

“He was downstairs using the candy machine,” Hoggard joked.

On Thursday, the Hedley frontman sent out the mysterious tweet: “Just hanging out with ramsay, keilberger, official, black, roberts, ryder, fraser and mr. ezrin himself.”

Bob Ezrin is a legendary Canadian producer who has worked with KISS, 30 Seconds To Mars, and Pink Floyd, among rock greats.

From Hoggard’s tweet, it appears as though Marianas Trench frontman Josh Ramsay, Sam Roberts and Serena Ryder were also in on the session.

Saturday’s MOD: Live At The Base guest Jully Black also confirmed her attendance at the recording session. “It was the most humbling experience,” she told VJ Jesse Giddings. “It’s a wonderful thing for our generation. We’ve seen ‘We Are The World,’ ‘Tears Are Not Enough’ and now with the ‘Wavin’ Flag’”

Stereos, K’naan, Nikki Yanofsky, Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley, Jay Malinowski of Bedouin Soundclash, Metric members Emily Haines and Jimmy Shaw, Kardinal Offishall and Fefe Dobson were reportedly all at the studio session. According to Fefe Dobson’s manager, Avril Lavgine and Justin Bieber also contributed to the song, recording their parts remotely.
