Oh, Jamie Lidell…please marry me. I went to see his concert last night at The Opera House and just as I predicted, I was completely blown away. His first song of the night was ‘Another Day’, which as my iPod knows, is my favourite song to date. Every song performed sounded just as good as on the album. None of that singing live out of breath and out of tune nonsense you know a lot of artists are guilty of! And while we all know that he’s got an awesome singing voice, Jamie showcased his talent to produce beats on the stage, too. It started off with beat-boxing (yes, he can beat-box!) and then the next thing we knew, we were moving to an intricate beat that was created right before our eyes.

I found it interesting to see that Jamie’s fan base doesn’t fit one definite description, probably because his sound is so versatile. Dancing directly in front of me was the classic hip hop guy with baggy jeans, an oversized sweater and a sideways cap. To my immediate left was a very conservative ‘businessy’ looking gentleman with his dress shirt buttoned all the way to top, dancing with his hands in his pockets. To my right was a group of girly girls with plastic framed glasses, reminiscent of the 40′s. And then there was me…at 25, I was easily one of the younger kids in the crowd, with my plain tee and jeans, sneakers and my SLR. This crowd was pulled together for the love of the music and I don’t think anyone was disappointed with the show we saw.
If you weren’t able to make it out to this show, expect to see a lot of Jamie in the near future. His tour continues to Ottawa and on June 10th, he will be appearing on Late Night With Conan O’Brien.
