American Idol Season 11 runner-up Jessica Sanchez has unveiled her debut single, Tonight, featuring Ne-Yo. The dance and R&B fusion is a surprising choice for the 17-year-old diva, considering she was known for her powerhouse ballads on Idol.
In an interview with Billboard back in January, Sanchez revealed that her album will have an R&B, pop and urban sound. “It’s going to be dancey and something that I could definitely see being remixed and in the clubs,” said Sanchez.
She also spoke about her experience working with Ne-Yo, who wrote Tonight. “I love him so much and I can’t believe that I got the opportunity to work with him,” she said.
I’ve been a fan of Sanchez ever since her performance of Buddy Holly’s It Doesn’t Matter Anymore on Idol. The show discovered a rare talent that could rival today’s top artists. Even more astonishing was the fact that she was only 15. So it shouldn’t be a surprise that I was absolutely gutted when she lost to Philip Phillips.
With that being said, I’m not feeling Tonight. It’s a radio-friendly dance song, but it’s too conventional to stand out within its own genre. Since this is only her first single, I’m hoping the rest of her album will better showcase her incredible vocal range.
Sanchez’s debut album, Me, You & the Music, will be released on May 7. She will perform her debut single for the first time on live television on tonight’s American Idol results show.
What are your thoughts on Jessica Sanchez’s new song?
