Your new pump up tune of 2011 has officially arrived! Jessie J’s recently released UK Single Do It Like a Dude is just about to take over the airwaves in North America. Similar to the domination of Florence and the Machine in 2010, I see the twinkle of this new star just beginning to shine. Nominated as the hottest new talent on the BBC’s “Sound of 2011”, a list compiled by 160 music know-it-alls, she is definitely worth a listen.
Jessie J doesn’t just have a killer sound, she is also a killer songwriter. You may remember Miley Cyrus’ addictive tune Party in the USA? The track was co-written by Jessie and hit-maker Producer Doctor Luke. This talented songwriter originally intended Do It Like a Dude for Rihanna, however ended up keeping the song for herself and putting it on her debut album, Who You Are, which is set to be released sometime in 2011.
Jessie J breaks the mold. I first saw her video one evening on the UK Big Top 40 during my travels in London and was immediately smitten with the singer. It wasn’t until I woke up the next day and still had the chorus stuck in my head that I knew I had to find out more about this artist. Preliminary research always involves scoping out various other Youtube vids.
Jessie’s intense stylistic presence in her “ghetto-chic” first music video Do It Like a Dude raised the bar even higher. Rumoured to soon be working with Brit sensation Leona Lewis and child-star Willow Smith, you better believe this girl’s got some tricks up her sleeve. In the meantime, check out her debut single, Do It Like a Dude and don’t miss her track Price Tag, featuring 2010′s break out artist, B.o.B.
