JoJo is the latest artist to release a mixtape putting her on the map

September 14th, 2010

It has been a while since we’ve heard from the songstress that brought us hits like Leave (Get Out), Baby It’s You, and Too Little Too Late. But JoJo is back with an eleven-track mixtape, Can’t Take That Away From Me, that showcases what can’t be taken away from her through songs about love, desires, and not giving a ‘fudgesicle.’

JoJo is ready to let everyone know that she has been preparing long and hard to top the charts with her next album release by giving people a little sneak peek into what may be coming up from the nineteen year-old.

Released on September 7, 2010 on Rap-Up.com, JoJo explains that with “The mixtape, I was able to do some things that were more soulful, incorporate live instruments, and say things that I wouldn’t normally say on an album. I was just able to take more of a risk. It is all over the place, just like me.” She was definitely right, as there wasn’t a sound that was predictable, from upbeat pop to slowed down ballads to a jazz-like feel. Although some songs, such as Running on Empty, Why Didn’t You Call, Can’t Take That Away From Me and Boy Without a Heart had the common theme of love and relationships, there were other songs such as Pretty Please and My Time is Money that you probably didn’t see coming.

Artists like Travis Garland and Jordan Gatsby also probably didn’t see the offer of track features coming their way, but their voices makes it onto the mixtape in tracks When Does It Go Away and What You Like respectively. Her voice not only complimented the guys vocals, but the entire mixtape to the beats of each track as well. Her powerful voice matched the song writing skills as JoJo wrote all but one song! It is evident in tracks such as Just a Dream and All I Want Is Everything that JoJo is more than prepared to wow us with her future. She has also released a video to the single off the mixtape called In the Dark.

Since this mixtape was more on the experimental side, it may not matter that not all of these tracks were meant to be singles or hits. However, fans that have waited a long time for a JoJo comeback will appreciate the hard work that went into this project. It may take a while for new listeners to understand how well JoJo used her years of experience in the industry. A girl who does it all will go far. Just wait a little while until her next album release and you will see! For now, download the mixtape here.
