It’s been 16 years since Whitney Houston’s last acting role in 1994′s The Preacher’s Wife and today’s release of the trailer for Sparkle sadly marks the last time we’ll see the music legend on the big screen. In her final role, Houston plays Emma, a retired singer living with her three musically gifted daughters in Detroit during the rise of Mowtown. Based on the 1976 film by the same name, Jordin Sparks plays the lead role as Sparkle, Houston’s most talented, but also most timid daughter. The film also stars Cee Lo Green, Mike Epps and Tika Sumpter and is based loosely on The Supremes.
Not only will she be acting in the film, but fans will also get to hear Houston sing, with a track list that includes the late singer performing His Eye Is on the Sparrow in the trailer.
Shooting of the 1970s remake took place mainly in Detroit and wrapped only weeks before Houston was found dead in her bathtub on February 11, 2012 at the age of 48. Sparkle will be released in theatres on August 17, 2012.
