Julian Koster’s Singing Saw

The holiday season will never be the same for me. It’s not so much going to be memories filled with good times in Newfoundland, shopping at the Avalon Mall, listening to Harry Connick, Jr. Christmas albums and watching National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation anymore. NOW, even if I wanted to, I won’t be able to rid my holiday memories of badger the singing saw, songs of freedom for reindeers, a Mexican Wrestler Santa named Santez and indie pop/rock/sound demon Julian Koster.

Some of you may know Julian from The Music Tapes, Elephant 6 Collective or Neutral Milk Hotel (if you don’t, get cracking on your Google machines); I now also know him as the dude who has forever changed the music of the holidays for me and showed me that a saw can take a bow after it performs - for real!

He has an album called the Singing Saw A Christmastime and has been touring all around North America in an old school white Festiva and performing classic Christmas carols with his singing saw badger and his own compositions on a banjo or keyboard in people’s living rooms and kitchens.

I followed him to a few houses when he stopped in Toronto and it was the most confusing, interesting, and badass thing I have ever done to celebrate Christmas. You can check out this holiday absurdity on MuchNews during MuchOnDemand from 5 to 6 p.m. ET on December 22.

In the meantime check out Julian here.

Happy ho ho,

  1. Dude - you didn’t know a saw can be played?! Toronto has so many saw players!

Granted - I guess they don’t do something as cool as Julian does - this going to people’s houses business is awsome.

For more saw check youtube, like this:

Maybe Julian is in it, I don’t know.
