2012 MMVA performer Justin Bieber’s album Believe came in with strong album sales, almost eclipsing Madonna’s MDMA for biggest album debut in 2012. Believe sold 374,000 copies in its first week of release. The album also sold 160,000 more than Justin’s last release, Under The Mistletoe. Quoted in The Huffington Post David Bakula, an analyst at SoundScan, remarked that Justin Bieber’s Believe “is a great debut. It’s a really good number. You look at some of the other things that have come out this year, between Madonna, Usher, Van Halen and these other big names that haven’t been able to do this much — and it puts things in perspective.” As for discussion of Believe under performing, Bakula contributed to the discussion saying, “Bieber’s fan base just isn’t that million first week sales machine like Lady Gaga’s was with her last album”. Bakula broke it down saying, “At the same time, it’s significantly higher than what his last album sold its first week. We’re talking about someone who has a growing fan base this far into your career, which is great.”
