k-os had a busy morning, working at The Bay’s toy department today in downtown Toronto. No, he doesn’t need the money - it was for charity.
The hip-hop artist joined the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s latest initiative, A Dare To Remember, to raise money for HIV-AIDS care in Africa. k-os’s dare was to return to his first job as a teenager: selling toys at The Bay.
Sarah Taylor paid him a visit in the Barbie section, where he filled her in on his return to retail.
“The Stephen Lewis Foundation called me up, and you know, you get these calls for charities or whatever, but then they were like ‘you can pick whatever dare you want to do, you just gotta raise money for AIDS.’ So there was this list of dares, and I picked go back to your old work for a day.”
k-os said that A Dare To Remember gave him an opportunity to have fun while supporting a worthy cause. He says it’s what the true spirit of charity should be.
“I just think charities sometimes people feel like they have to stretch themselves sometimes,” he said. “Charity becomes this word where it’s like doing something you don’t want to do. Where it’s opposite, it’s something you’re passionate about.”
So far k-os has made it to $475 of his $3000 goal. To support A Dare To Remember, go to stephenlewisfoundation.org.
