Rap pop duo Karmin first gained notoriety for their amazing hip hop covers and now the band is putting their own spin on Drake’s latest release, Started From The Bottom. Keeping the musicality and flow of the song the same, Karmin switched up many of the lyrics to better reflect their journey to the top of the charts.
In the song, lead singer Amy Heidemann raps about comparisons between her and other female rappers like Iggy Azaelea and Nicki Minaj, questioning why female artists in hip hop can’t exist on their own. Heidemann also brings up the success of the band in mainstream media, including “Rolling Stone dude gave us 1/ Hope he didn’t notice when they put us on the cover son”.
The remixed track also points out that like Drake, Karmin enjoyed huge success before officially releasing an album, rapping “I don’t wanna do any complaining/ but we didn’t SNL without any music out yet”.
