Kate Winslet as Jeanine Matthews in the upcoming adaptation of the Veronica Roth young adult franchise, Divergent, has officially been confirmed by Summit Entertainment.
Widely compared to The Hunger Games, Divergent is the first installment in an action adventure trilogy about a future society where communities are divided into factions based on human traits. The Secret Life of the American Teenager’s Shailene Woodley and British newcomer Theo James are the film’s leads.
Winslet joins Maggie Q, Zoe Kravitz and Ansel Englort in supporting roles. The 37-year-old Oscar-winning actress plays Jeanine Matthews, the leader of the Erudite faction, the most intelligent of all factions.
Also in talks to join the cast in an unspecified role is Aaron Eckhart. He could either be cast as Marcus Eaton or Andrew Prior, but the actor refused to confirm when asked in a recent interview with Collider.
I don’t know about you guys, but I’m quite excited to see Winslet play a villain in her first ever franchise film. Winslet tends to star in Oscar bait, so whenever she chooses projects outside of that, it’s always a welcomed surprise. Jeanine Matthews will just be the latest addition her diverse and incredible collection of roles.
Divergent is directed by Neil Burger and will be released in theaters on March 21, 2014.
