Kelly Won’t Shut Up & Sing

August 20th, 2007

Last week I happened upon the Dixie Chicks movie Shut Up And Sing, a movie I had wanted to see but kinda forgot about. For those of you who don’t know…it’s the story of the trouble the girls had after lead singer Natalie made a negative statement about George Bush on the eve of the Iraq invasion in 2003.

It was serendipitous that I got to see this movie because today I interviewed Kelly Clarkson…who has had her own music industry woes this year with the release of her new album My December. Although a completely different scenario, Kelly has had to stand up for herself in a very similar way and like the Dixie Chicks did not back down and stayed true to what she believed in. She fought for her own artistic desire to write her own songs and not make an album just to please her record company.

I can’t say I have ever owned a Dixie Chicks or Kelly Clarkson album, but this type of self righteousness is so awesome to see from a couple of artists who are some of the biggest selling in recent years and are very much a part of the major label machine. It made me listen to the new Kelly Clarkson album with different ears and appreciate it more than perhaps I would have otherwise. In the case of the Dixie Chicks, well, I love what Rick Rubin has done as a producer for the Chili Peppers, Slayer, System of a Down, Johnny Cash and the Mars Volta…so who knows, maybe I’ll feel the same about what he did with the chicks.

You can check out my interview with Kelly this Saturday at 11am and 11pm Sunday on the Loop Weekend.
