Canadian hip-hop maestro K’Naan was on MOD today, where he teased a few more details about the all-star charity remake of his song, “Wavin’ Flag.” The group of artists participating in the single now have a name, “Young Artists for Haiti,” and K’Naan confirmed that proceeds from the song will go to Free The Children, War Child Canada and World Vision.
While K’Naan kept mum about the celebrities involved in the project (which MUCH has confirmed includes Hedley, Fefe Dobson, Jully Black and others), he did hint that there were as many as 50 artists involved. He also said that song would feature new lyrics, as well as backing from a string section and children’s choir.
“I wanted to take the song away from being my song to being our song,” the singer said. “It has become an instrument for other people to use for positivity.”
As for how the project came about, K’Naan said all it took were a few calls to his favourite artists, who all happily agreed to take part. The recording was filmed by a camera crew for a possible music video and television special. Though the official release date for the single has yet to be announced, K’Naan said he hopes the energy and passion he felt in the studio will resonate with listeners across Canada.
“The spirit [in the room] was unbelievable,” he said. “It really was a magical moment.”
