Born This Way by Lady Gaga is nothing less than a HUGE pop culture phenomenon. Just ask Amazon.com. The same day the album was available in stores, it was available as a digital download (14 songs plus booklet) for 99 cents from Amazon. And then their site practically crashed (it slowed down to a snail’s pace).
Leave it to Lady Gaga to almost break the internet.
After tweeting to their 1.5 million “daily deal” followers the album would be selling for 99 cents, Amazon quickly tweeted this message soon after:
“We’re currently experiencing very high volume. If you order today, you will get the full @ladygaga album for $.99. Thanks for your patience.”
So, was this a good idea? The sale got mixed reviews apparently. Some understood the download would not be instantaneously because it was such a good deal, while others bitched and complained about the massive wait time (according to Twitter rants).
Two different versions of the album (regular and special edition) were selling on Apple‘s iTunes for $11.99 and $15.99. No wonder Amazon.com almost broke down.
