Latest Tunes From R.E.M.

rem accelerate album cover.jpgR.E.M.‘s latest album, Accelerate, is streaming in full over on iLike.com. As I was clicking to go listen, I couldn’t help but wonder, “Does anyone care about R.E.M. anymore?” A part of me feels that they are as dated as Michael Stipe‘s recent coming-out announcement (or rather his recent clever announcement that his bandmates are, in fact, straight).

To be honest, I haven’t listened to these guys much since their 1994 Monster album (which included the great What’s The Frequency, Kenneth?). And listening to Accelerate, I am happy to report that they still sound like the R.E.M. I remember. My favourite song so far on the new album? The campy, fun I’m Gonna DJ.

That being said, unfortunately no song stands out as much as hits of their past as, say, the iconic Losing My Religion or the heart-breaking Everybody Hurts. With an album title like Accelerate, I expect driving hooks and melodies – but I’m not entirely hooked. Am I the only one who is feeling so apathetic?
