James Murphy is doing a terrible job at retiring. The restless leader of electro-dance band, LCD Soundsystem called it quits last year and celebrated with a final show at Madison Square Garden in New York City, which has now been turned into a documentary called Shut Up and Play the Hits (hitting theatres next Wednesday). But since retiring last April, Murphy has decided to open a coffee shop, gone on countless DJ tours and even plans on reuniting the band to record a mystery cover for a film that he refuses to reveal.
Last night, Murphy appeared on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon to discuss his post-retirement life, how he passed on an opportunity to write for Seinfeld (random!) and even took a few minutes to jump off and jam with The Roots. He tells Fallon, “If you have an opportunity to play a song you like with The Roots, you do it. I haven’t played guitar in a band in about twenty years so I thought it would be a good idea to do it.”
Watch the interview and jam session below.
