Katy Perry (not-so) subtly revealed the album cover of her upcoming album, Prism, this morning on a jumbotron during Good Morning America. The cover, shot by Ryan McGinley, is a bright, floral shot of the pop star in a field of flowers. But, a picture is worth a thousand words, right? So we’re going to do just that; let’s dissect the heck out of this album cover! (Warning: this is not actually 1000 words)
To start off, here is the album cover for Prism:
Pretty! We love it!
Katy Perry is the star of the cover, of course. Sporting a stripped-down look, Perry’s make-up has toned down significantly, showing a more natural look. Her hair is tousled and relaxed, and she is wearing nothing, but a shimmering piece of fabric that she has wrapped around herself. This is Katy Perry saying, “This is the real me.”
Unlike the strong, Lisa Frank-style colours of Perry’s Roar cover, Prism utilizes light, summery colours. Just as the title suggests, there is a subtle wave of rainbow colours that hits Perry in the light oh-so-beautifully. The airiness of the colour scheme suggests a bright, new beginning of sorts. No longer clouded in any darkness she endured in the past, Perry is now basking in the rays of lightness, enlightened and wiser now.
In the inner shot, Perry is standing in a field of sunflowers, specifically. Sunflowers are often seen as a symbol of happiness, strength and love, all messages Perry is surely trying to convey. Some say that sunflowers also represent a constant search for enlightenment as they always turn to face the sun.
The ‘A’ and the ‘Y’ in her name is formed into triangles because, y’know, prisms and whatnot. Prism itself is fragmented, but put back together. Again, both show a spectrum of colours. It’s edgy, stylish and confident; definitely not the delicate, bubbly handwriting of her past two records.
Pretty! WE STILL LOVE IT!
