You’ll never guess how I spent my Friday night, so here’s a clue…

Yes! Indeed, I could be found outside Toronto’s ROM, participating in the LIGHTSABER BATTLE! Now, I am no big Star Wars fan (I’ve actually only seen a bit of the first movie…and that’s it), but that being said there as no way I was going to miss out on this Newmindspace event.

Newmindspace is a group “committed to reclaiming public space” and have organized other crazy events like public pillow fights and giant games of Capture The Flag. I’ve missed out on those in the past, so I was really looking forward to Friday night’s battle.

When I met up with some of my friends outside the ROM at 9:30pm the place was already packed. It was as if we were all waiting for a concert to start. Some people were hardcore and all dressed up, while others (like me) were just there for the randomness of it all. By 10pm everyone was restless, and soon enough neon coloured meter-long cardboard tubes were thrown into the crowd. These were our lightsabers! Black lights were then turned on, and we began to battle it out! It was a tad chaotic, but awesome. I hope a new random event like this happens again soon!
