It is hard to take an album called Alien Tentacle Sex seriously but before you press the Skip button take a second or two and listen to this amazing collection of soulful, electro, chill music by TALWST (pronounced “tall-waist”). TALWST, also known as Curtis Santiago, is a musician, fashion designer, and contemporary visual artist from Toronto. Comparisons to Toronto’s The Weeknd will be made and for good reason: one of the producers on this album Illangelo, also helped produce The Weeknd’s mix tape, House of Balloons.
The best part of this collection of songs is that each piece seems to be a collection of TALWST’s thoughts. The kinds of thoughts that are thought late at night when contemplating life, contemplating loneliness, and contemplating connecting with others. Though the album is really explicit, I can get the sentiment, and it is just nice thinking that artists like TALWST can help further diversify the Canadian sound landscape.
Best songs: Colors, Lonely Guy
Listen to TALWST’s album Alien Tentacle Sex before it drops on May 22, and other new great albums from Gossip, Hey Ocean!, and Adam Lambert at MuchMusic’s First Spins section.
PS: As noted above, this album is pretty explicit, so listener’s discretion is advised.
