After revealing a release date of March 26 during his birthday episode on The Ellen DeGeneres Show at the beginning of March, Justin Bieber has made good on his promise of new music and dropped his first single Boyfriend from his upcoming album Believe. Co-produced and co-written by Mike Posner, the track is Bieber’s most mature sounding song, with a smooth R&B feel and slow beat.
Bieber talked to Ryan Seacrest this week about expectations for his new album, saying “There’s so many people that are going to give me opinions, but I’m the only one who can ultimately make those decisions, because I’m going to have to live with my career for the rest of my life. So I thought this was the perfect single was me all the way; it is a representation of me.”
Boyfriend has the pop and R&B sound that is typical of Posner’s music, with Bieber showcasing his rapping abilities for the first time on one of his own albums (Bieber has released freestyle raps and covered tracks, including his take on Drake’s Marvin’s Room).
