Hey Ocean! is Ashleigh Ball, David Beckingham and David Vertesi and they hail all the way from Vancouver, British Columbia. This group has been floating on the indie radar for awhile, as they’ve been regarded as a promising up-and-coming group in the Canadian music community.
What makes their third studio album, IS, killer is that it is apologetically upbeat and uplifting. Songs like Make A New Dance, where Ashleigh Ball sings about shaky but hopeful new feelings, you can’t help but do as the song says and dance. Watch for a tongue-in-cheek reference to the show So You Think You Can Dance. And if you’re a Dolly Parton fan, you’re going to love Jolene because it makes reference to Parton’s hit track. Bicycle is one of those sweet and plinky tracks that will make you want to sip lemonade and walk barefoot in a field of daisies. Yes, we went there. Don’t be the last to know who these guys are because they are going to contribute to the ever-changing landscape of Canadian music. The guys from One tree hill have even noticed as Hey Ocean!’s track, Islands was featured in an episode.
Best Tracks: Make A New Dance Up, Jolene, Change, I Am A Heart
Listen to IS in MuchMusic’s First Spin section before it drops on May 15. You can listen to other great albums from artists like Beach House and Adam Lambert in First Spin too.
