The Vaccines have only been together for two years, but they seem to have struck something with their second album, Come of Age. Like the title might suggest, it’s unknown as to whether the band has grown up personally, but they’ve definitely developed musically between albums.
Come of Age pulls from some of the band’s most apparent influences, from the Strokes formula used on opening track No Hope to the props they give to surf-rock and Ramones-esque riffs on other tracks throughout the album. That being said, though, The Vaccines do succeed in adapting other people’s sounds and crafting their own distinct sound on this cohesive album.
Highlights include Teenage Icon, where lead singer Justin Young claims that he’s no teenage icon and Ghost Town with its menacing, bouncy bass and razor sharp riffs cutting through each verse.
This is only the band’s second album, but if this is what the process of growing up and maturing sounds like, we can’t wait to hear the full-fledged grown up album to come. At this rate, they’ve already come into their own as a band so they can only go up from here.
