If you’ve found yourself disappointed or underwhelmed by The Killers’ new album Day & Age, consider the second album from New Brunswick, New Jersey’s The Gaslight Anthem everything you’d wished it had been and more.
I’ve read so many reviews of the new album (The ’59 Sound) that boldly claim some of its songs are “the best punk anthems of the past decade”. While I’m not sure that’s the case, you have to agree that songs like Old White Lincoln, Here’s Looking At You, Kid and Miles Davis & The Cool (which you can hear on MySpace) are pretty terrific.
I was turned on to The ’59 Sound last week after Zane Lowe mentioned the band on his daily show, and I’m so glad I did, cause the album’s title track is such a terrific introduction to what this relatively new band has to offer. You can hear echoes of Bruce Springsteen (a common comparison by critics and reviewers), who you might already know is also from New Jersey, and that elusive ‘sound’ that The Killers have been trying to mimic on the last two albums. But it’s so much better than that.
The band will be performing on Conan O’Brien on Tuesday, December 9. Make sure you watch!
