[Guest blog from Dolores O'Riordan of The Cranberries]
It’s a pity it’s come to this, but it’s a fact. It’s amazing that all these musicians have come together to help influence the human race to put a stop to the destruction.
As an individual, I have 4 kids and I can tell you as a mother that our kids are growing up with a different awarness than we did. They spend hours in school learning about the melting ice caps and holes in the ozone layer. It’s amazing that recycling is second nature to them.
It would be good if the government was more strict about reducing aerosol and carbon emissions. I’ve seen cars in third world countries emitting black, black fumes. It adds up. If countries completely omitted aerosol, it would make such a difference. There are alternatives, like roll-on deodorant.
I think Canada is one of the leading countries in making change, and it’s good to see my country has made a lot of changes in the past few years. The see through bags have hit the shores of Ireland, and even in the countryside you can see improvements.
Tolerance should be as near to zero as possible when it comes to damaging the environment. If you don’t become involved, things are going to continue to get worse.
It’s sad to see how global warming is affecting the Antarctic; melting ice caps and the animals could soon have no habitat. The polar bears’ homes are melting and they have to swim more and more - soon they won’t be able to swim anymore, and they’ll drown. The whole idea of polar bears becoming extinct, elephants becoming extinct in other continents…it’s going to happen unless we do something. We’re seriously affecting the globe.
Where will we go?

I truly believe that we, as humans (the alleged alpha species on this panet), must STOP our environmental corruption (cause Mother Nature does NOT like being raped) and it will, in time, fix what we’ve damaged. That said, there are these little inconvenient truths called Ice Ages (they happen about every 20,000 - 50,000 years - depending on our distance from the sun (mostly), which ranges greatly over time (and is also affected by the affect of comets and asteroids passing through our solar system - sometimes gravitational forces are a most inconvenient truth, as well). One last thing to remember class is, in between Ice Ages there are these naturally occuring events, called Global Warming cycles (the proof is in the geological record - you can actually look it up, don’t just my word for it). All of the proceeding does NOT deminish my belief that human need to STOP ’shitting were we drink’. It’s long past time for us, the whole of the human species (which should include politicians…sometimes, anyway) to clean up the mess we’ve made. However, besides giving us air we can breathe (not chew) and water we can drink (that won’t kill us - or cause genetic defects in our children), it will NOT (I’ll say that again for clarity — WILL NOT) stop Global Warming, it will slow it down…some. Unfortunately, periods Global Warming are inevitable…however, we don’t have to add to the effect or speed up its onset. Without our mess, we might have a millenium (and perhaps as much as 40,000 years) before the next period of Global Warming (at which point, regardless of what we do, the ice caps WILL melt and species (maybe our own, unfortunately) WILL disappear from the face of the Earth — welcome to the greater Inconvenient Truth of all). The fundamental truth is this, Al Gore’s ‘All-or-nothing’ cries will, eventually improve our environment and our lives (and the lives of our decendants), but it WILL NOT stop the next period of Global Warming (or the one after that, etc.) from happening; and his lie could cause people to not clean up the Earth (a disasterous turn of events). The Truth, the whole Truth, and nothing but the Truth is a far better way to go (unless you assume humans are soooo stupid they need to be beaten over the head with a half-truth to get them scared enough to do the ONLY right thing… then again, stupidity (or at least, ignorance) got us here in the first place — well then, go for it Al). Just a couple of things to think about.
