Liz Does Lolla: Day 3 brings musical showers

August 8th, 2011

I’m going to start this one off with a recap of Saturday night. To begin our after party adventure we went to the W Hotel where DJ Mia Moretti and violinist Caitlin Moe were doing their thing. We chatted with them for a bit while Skylar Grey performed in the background. My interview with this fun and talented duo will be featured in my upcoming episodes of Liz Online. Don’t miss ‘em!

After catching the end of Skylar Grey’s set, who might I add was phenomenal live, I was hanging out in the party lounge and along walks my childhood crush, Elijah Wood. This was the highlight of my night. While smaller than I expected, he’s still adorable and my crush will never go away.

Onto Day 3 aka the day of A.D.D. Weather.

Starting the day off with a sleep-in and walking to the park in the beautiful sunshine, we thought the rain from the morning was gone for the day. Little did we know we would be stuck under a flimsy tent backstage at Best Coast in a matter of hours.

Upon arrival at the park we met up with the sweet pea Lissie and rode in her van over to the Google + stage where she would soon be performing. While catching up and getting the inside scoop on her set, she taught me some great lessons and gave me some tips on how to preserve my voice (this weekend I sounded like I was hitting puberty the entire time).

Right before Lissie’s set a group called Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. hit the stage and won me over by playing live. Their set included some 80s covers, great synth lines and bubbles. Yeah, bubbles! Go check them out, they won’t fail your ears.

Along came Lissie, whose set was nothing shy of perfect. For me, the acts that make a festival are the indie folk artists who make me want to sit in the grass sipping on lemonade, while soaking up the sun. You know, Mumford and Sons, Frightened Rabbit, Edward Sharpe and of course, Lissie.

Kyle got on stage for the full set to shoot some of our BEST footage of the weekend, but with a voice as pure as Lissie’s, anywhere within hearing range is wonderful.

Immediately after Lissie wrapped up down came the rain. Poor Best Coast had to play to a crowd who was caught in the torrential downpour. That didn’t stop us from singing along and enjoying her lo-fi sound. Super cute girl, great sound and well dressed as always.

We dipped from her set to get back to the media tent for some shelter and soon the rain cleared just in time for Explosions in the Sky. That band is one in one word – epic. There we are, soaking wet, a light sprinkle and a rainbow appears over their stage while they play Your Hand in Mine. My heart sunk and my ears were simply delighted.

Unfortunately, just when we thought the rain had stopped for good along came a huge dark cloud and more downpour. We caught the beginning of Deadmau5, but due to holding onto expensive gear and valuable footage, we needed to opt out of seeing the headliners. I heard Foo Fighters were unreal and Deadmau5 stole the show (as always).

After getting back to the hotel it dawned on us how tired we all were. So, after a bite to eat, we packed our bags and headed to bed.

If you ask me, it was one wicked weekend. Lollapalooza 2011 was wonderful and now I’m ready to sleep for a full 24 hours. Oh wait, I can’t do that, I’ve gotta organize the footage so I can share with all of you. Totally worth it.

I’m already thinking of next year. You’re all welcome to join in on the fun!
