As with most mysterious LOST-related revelations, this one cannot bode well. It’s either:
a) Kinda cool
or
b) What’chu talking about, Jack?
Don’t get me wrong, we all already know how much of a crazy LOST fan I am. But I’m not sure how I feel about this “Lost U” marketing campaign, which ABC’s guys have thrown together.
From what I can gather, the eventual plan is to have little videos of ‘courses’ narrated by actors and other important people (like directors!) that you can watch to learn some interesting stuff to help you interpret the events of the show. Which could be pretty helpful, especially in terms of Jacob’s tapestry, for example.
The biggest question is if this whole campaign is coming across as too corny. I mean, come on, a random blurb for a Driveshaft Cover Band contest held in the Hume Amphitheater? The Smokey Patrol being the school’s security team? Making the school’s mascot a polar bear? Ehhhhhh. They could have done better, and they probably could have been less lame about it if they wanted to.
Why not have Jack giving a first aid course, or have Sawyer teaching people about pyramid schemes? Or even better, let’s get Ben to teach the audience to be crazy bastards? That could be pretty useful, too!
Part of what I like best about LOST is figuring stuff out on my own (and, you know, with the help of people around the office). I’d rather not have all the intellectual references and egyptian themes spoon-fed to me: it just takes all the fun and mystery out of it.
LOST guys: +5 points for creativity, but -3 points for execution. I’m sure you’ll do better next time!
