LTTGOE: Charlotte Gainsbourg

I’ve a total girl crush on Charlotte Gainsbourg ever since I first saw her in 21 Grams, an amazing movie by one of my favourite directors ever, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. Prior to that, she’d starred in about a jillion French films…but the only English ones to make a splash were 21 Grams & Science Of Sleep.

Anyhoodle - Charlotte’s dad, as you may know, is the late Serge Gainsbourg, and his talents as a singer/songwriter have obviously been passed along on her ‘debut’ (I use the term loosely as Charlotte released an album in 1986 when she was 15 years old) album 5:55.

I acquired the album sometime last year but I’ve only recently started to scrutinize it obsessively. For the first two weeks I literally couldn’t make it past track 3 (The Operation) - I kept playing back the first three tracks, over and over. Now I’ve managed to listen to the entire album and I adore it. My favourite song by far is AF607105 (which unfortunately you can’t listen to on her MySpace page). I defy you to listen to it and tell me it doesn’t remind you of the sexiest, most luscious Air-inspired song ever to be written. And, Air actually helped her out on the album, along with Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker & Radiohead’s sixth member, Nigel Godrich. That’s quite the resume.

I’m not exaggerating when I say that over the past six months or so, Charlotte’s been in pretty much every music, beauty & fashion magazine in existence (I should know; I subscribe to 35 mags). We’re talking Vogue, Elle, Teen Vogue, Flare, Bust, Spin, Marie Claire, Glamour, Jane, etc. And the angle that each magazine has taken has been totally different each time - sometimes they’re promoting her album, sometimes it’s Science Of Sleep, sometimes it’s her killer sense of style. Charlotte’s ubiquitous. And totally sophisticated!

Oh. NME is reporting that Charlotte is OK today after undergoing brain surgery (!!) after a water-skiing accident a couple of months ago, that resulted in a brain hemorrhage. Phew.
