On Saturday night, Kyle and I stumbled into good ol’ Lee’s Palace in Toronto - for a concert by Montreal-based Malajube.
This is the band that Kat went to last year and came out with a black eye after getting kicked in the face! Now this time around, it didn’t get as rowdy, but everyone was digging the music nonetheless. As predicted, these guys put on a great show (it’s just unfortunate that they had some of those sound issues that Lee’s Palace seems to have a lot of). Definitely go check out their fun, creative music videos (I particularly enjoy their latest for Etienne D’Aout).
Now, sound issues aside, Malajube delivered the goods - but their opening act, a lil’ band called Hollerado, were what impressed me the most. Although not that many people had arrived yet while they were on, they still gave it their all. They were funny, entertaining, and luckily were not plagued by the same sound issues that Malajube had. (They even mentioned they had a wicked “sound guy”). Hollerado sounded clean, together, and their positive attitude was infectious. And I know that this will come off as a bit, um, gay - but they were effin’ adorable.
Afterwards, I went up to the shaggy-haired lead singer and mentioned that they were awesome - he then sold me a “Demo In A Bag” (literally, a burnt CD in a ziplock bag) for 5 buck-a-roos! So now I’m rockin’ out to 8 of their tracks - the perfect music for that next great garage/basement/bush party (and Telus commercials everywhere).
I hesitate to “liken” their sound to other bands, because I feel that then takes away a piece of their originality - so listen for yourself! They have a few tunes up on their MySpace but do yourself a favour and go to their official site and download (for FREE!) their ground-stompin party anthem Americanarama.
Listen To These Guys Or Else. It’ll be the the best $0 you’ve ever spent.
